The risks facing travellers today might not be the ones they face tomorrow, but a robust travel risk management program will help organisations be prepared. ISO 31030 will help you determine if your travel risk policy is good enough to fulfil your duty of care obligations.
ISO 31030 WILL ALSO:

ISO 31030:2021 is an industry-first best practice framework that helps organisations evaluate and manage their travel risks effectively. The guidance document was developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and provides a structured approach to manage risks associated with travel. It covers policy development, program implementation, threat identification, risk assessment, and prevention/mitigation strategies.
Organisations use the guidance document to benchmark their travel risk policies, determine if they are fulfilling their legal duty of care obligations, and ensure their travellers are safe. ISO 31030 allows travel managers to identify threats and opportunities and take ownership of travel risk.
Contrary to popular belief, ISO 31030 is not certifiable. It simply offers a travel risk management framework to organisations to ensure their travel policies are up to date. However, our team has developed a self-audit tool based on this guidance that breaks down the 48-page document leaving you with actionable steps. Additionally, many organisations rely on our expert consulting services to ensure that their policies are up to date and in line with ISO 31030.
ISO 31030 is applicable for organisations of any type, regardless of their size or industry sector, as long as they have a travelling population. This includes commercial businesses, charitable and not-for-profit organisations, governmental agencies, and academic institutions. The guidance document is designed to be adaptable to a broad range of settings that travel managers or those responsible for the safety of their travellers should be using.
This document does not apply to tourism and leisure-related travel, except in relation to people travelling on behalf of the organisation.
Critical events can occur at any time and can have a significant impact on an organisation‘s bottom line, reputation, and employee morale.
While travel risk management (TRM) isn’t a new concept, it’s frequently underdeveloped compared to other risk policies and programs within an organisation. The ISO 31030 guidance can help an organisation quickly mature their TRM programs. This new guidance brings together industry best practice risk mitigation techniques to create the first global framework designed to support organisations in protecting their travelers and fulfilling their Duty of Care requirements.
Travel risk management encompasses the strategies and measures used to safeguard employees and assets before, during or after business travel or safeguarding operations abroad. It involves assessing potential threats, managing vulnerabilities, and ensuring the continuity of business processes while on the move. To navigate the dynamic landscape of travel risk management effectively, a well-structured crisis management plan is indispensable.

“The whole team at World Travel Protection (WTP) has been magnificent, truly demonstrating the value and peace of mind of our partnership.
Ahead of a business trip to the Philippines, our executive team expressed safety concerns, particularly around the perceived risks of kidnapping and potential personal harm. The WTP Security team delivered a comprehensive, tailored pre-travel briefing that addressed the specific needs of our travellers, the destination, and our business objectives.
The briefing offered practical, actionable advice to mitigate potential risks and, importantly, empowered our team with the confidence to carry out this core business activity. WTP’s expertise in travel risk management was evident throughout, and we have full confidence in their ability to provide on-the-ground assistance and support whenever required on this trip.”

“We engaged World Travel Protection’s security team to support a high-stakes business trip to Iraq, where our in-person attendance was critical to the success of a key meeting. With minimal lead time, WTP delivered a comprehensive written travel risk assessment, clearly outlining potential threats and practical mitigation strategies. Additionally, WTP conducted a thorough pre-departure briefing to prepare our traveller for the unique challenges of the region and implemented check-in protocols to ensure their safety throughout the trip.
