Family holidays are often some of our most cherished memories. Exploring a new place with your children can make the experience just that extra bit special. But while preparing for any trip for yourself takes time and research, prepping for a kid-friendly holiday can take a little more effort just to keep everything running smoothly, and everyone happy. To kick off your planning we’ve put together a list of some top things to start thinking about before your next family adventure.
Ensure that they are healthy for travel
When travelling to a new country, your children can be exposed to new viruses and germs that they are not use too. Discussing your plans with your doctor can help ensure your kids have any vaccinations they require and can help you be prepared for what to do if they contract any common illnesses. Our Travel GP service is also an excellent first point of contact if your kids do become unwell while travelling. Over the phone they can provide advice, prescriptions as well as guidance on your closest medical facility.
Plan your packing
The art of packing and not overpacking can be a challenge for any trip, but it can become harder when you have children involved. While you can’t bring everything but the kitchen sink, you also don’t want to arrive in a foreign country and have to source nappies, wipes or other essentials. Make a list of everything you think you need and then review. It’s amazing how a little extra planning of what you are going to take, and where you are going to pack it can help.
Book for child friendly places
There is nothing worse than arriving at your hotel room to find out that it isn’t suited for children. Doing your research beforehand to find appropriate accommodation can save you a lot of headaches and tantrums. Checking review sites and even searching for ‘family-friendly’ hotels on booking sites can be an easy first step to know what a place has to offer.
The same goes for restaurants and food options. When travelling alone or with other adults, it can be simple just to find a place to eat without any planning. But when travelling with children, you might not have that luxury. You don’t want to be walking around aimlessly with hungry munchkins in tow, searching for a place that offers kids meals. Do your research beforehand!
It’s their holiday too
When you’re the one planning the holiday, it can be easy to pick out activities and places that you want to see. But remember, it’s also your kids holiday so planning things for them to enjoy is important too. Striking a balance between the two can make for a very happy holiday, and you never know you may get just as much enjoyment out of a theme park or kids museum as they do.
While travelling with kids can at times be a bit challenging, family holidays can also create new and lasting memories. Doing your research and planning can go a long way in keeping your trip running smoothly, and everyone happy.
