Recent changes to U.S. policies regarding Gender X passports have created uncertainty for travellers.
While some countries recognise the Gender X marker in passports, many do not, potentially causing challenges for gender-diverse passport holders. Given that the rights of Gender X travellers vary by destination, organisations sending employees abroad must consider how to support their travellers in locations where their rights may differ from those at home.
Since 2022, the U.S. Department of State has been issuing passports with an X gender marker, following the 2021 announcement that applicants could self-select their gender marker (M, F, or X) without needing additional supporting documentation. However, the current administration has now revoked the ability for applicants to self-certify their gender if it does not match the sex listed on other identity documents. This new directive has created some confusion and uncertainty for Gender X travellers.
Is Travel Safe for Gender X travellers?
Unfortunately, some countries or airlines may still require travellers to have a passport with a binary gender marker F or M marker to travel or cross borders. This can pose challenges for Gender X travellers who do not have another passport with a binary gender marker on it.
In such cases, Gender X travellers may face difficulties when travelling internationally, including being denied entry to certain countries or denied boarding on flights. This can happen while transiting as well. This can be a concerning and potentially discriminatory situation for Gender X individuals who are simply trying to travel and explore the world.
There is no comprehensive list of specific airlines that do not accept passports with a gender X or non-binary gender marker, as policies and regulations can vary and change over time. Airlines may have different policies and procedures regarding gender markers on passports and other identification documents.
Because of this, it is recommended that Gender X travellers contact the specific airline they plan to fly with directly to inquire about their policies and requirements regarding gender markers on passports. Travellers can also check the entry requirements of the destination country to ensure compliance with any regulations related to gender markers on travel documents.
As of now, there are still several countries that do not offer a gender X or non-binary gender marker option on passports. Some countries may only recognise male or female gender markers on official travel documents.

- New applications & renewals: New applications or renewals for Gender X passports are no longer allowed.
- Replacing X marker passports: Passports issued with an X marker within the last year can be replaced at no cost with a passport that has a binary F or M sex marker.
Information for Non-American Gender X Passport Holders (as of 26 March 2025):
- Entry to the USA: To date, there has been no evidence of Gender X passport holders being denied entry into the U.S. to date. However, travellers may face challenges at points of entry, such as needing to declare a binary F or M sex marker.
- Challenges for non-U.S. passport holders: For non-U.S. passport holders, entry cannot be guaranteed when travelling with a Gender X passport. It’s crucial to confirm local immigration laws with the relevant embassy or consulate before departure.
